Dan Cameron at Brown!

The Brown University Visual Art Department is hosting curator Dan Cameron
for a talk about the Prospect.1 Biennial in New Orleans.

WHERE: List Art Center Room 120
WHEN: Thursday, December 3, 4:00 PM

Dan Cameron is a noted curator who has organized numerous large-scale and
international exhibitions. He is the former senior curator of the New Museum
of Contemporary Art in New York [1995-2006], and now the Director of Visual
Art at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center. Cameron will be talking
about his experience organizing the 2008 Prospect.1 New Orleans, the largest
biennial of international art in the United States.

Join us to hear of Cameron's efforts to help revitalize the city of New
Orleans and to showcase new artistic practices from around the world.

(New York, NY) Anna Kustera is pleased to present the second solo exhibition by LA based artist Loren Holland. In these recent works, Holland uses oil paint on paper to depict highly enigmatic female figures, exploiting the media’s hyper-sexualized, self-assured images of femininity. By distorting the usual connotations of these images, her brightly colored works examine themes of depravity and excess, and how vices and hedonistic mistakes can, in fact, contribute to new knowledge and understanding.

Brown Summer Studies in Pont-Aven 2009

This summer Professor Wendy Edwards taught Painting at Pont-Aven, with the assistance of Hope Hardesty '08 as her TA. The immersion setting and individual attention from faculty at Pont-Aven make this an ideal opportunity for students concentrating in the Arts. The program is an intensive live work environment that is often a bridge to graduate studies. For all its beauty and history as an art community, Pont-Aven is also an ideal place for critical contemporary dialogues to take place. It offers an abundant source of visual information for students to work from. The ocean, Aven River, fields and nearby pre-historic sites are easily accessed, providing rich references for the studio courses.

BILT is a design collaborative founded by four recent graduates of Brown University. Our design background is diverse, each of us having worked in a variety of media, on a range of scales, and with different intentions: industrial design, theatre, architecture, furniture, and sculpture. Working on commission, we respond to the individual needs of clients and consider their input from the drawing board to the finished product. Our work reflects a commitment to formal and conceptual innovation paired with high quality fabrication.

Mixtape Club, a successful animating and directing trio consisting of alums, Jesse Casey '04, Michelle Higa '04 and Chris Smith '05. Higa and Smith knew each other from their years working as Multimedia Laba consultants. The three had taken several classes together, but the grand culmination of their collaborative efforts at Brown wasn't until Chaise, a DVD magazine they released in 2005 with several other students. "I think its the technical and artistic nerdery that binds us together," Casey said.

Charles Simonds majored in art at the University of California at Berkeley and after graduation, taught college art in New Jersey. There he discovered an area of clay pits that had once provided the raw material for some of Manhattan's older buildings. He literally immersed himself in the subject, burying himself in a pool of wet clay to get a feel for the material. Back in New York, where he still lives, he experimented with clay and sand, learning to capture the look of the American Southwest or an African savanna. His sculptures are enchanting miniature architecture and landscapes. Most are landforms with small chambers and towers; some are abstract organic shapes, bulbous or phallic in form. For all their fragility and playfulness, Simonds's sculptures are as serious and eloquent as any work in metal or stone. The law of Charles Simonds's realm is elegant and simple. Earth gives rise to living beings who in turn build towns and temples, disturbing and hallowing the mud that gave them life. Individuals die and the artifacts of their culture decay and return to the earth.

Assistant Professor of Visual Art (Tenure Track)

Position: Brown University Department of Visual Art is searching for an artist to teach at the Undergraduate level. The candidate should be an artist who uses digital media as a central component of a painting practice.

Requirements: Applicants will have earned an MFA, have 3 years full time equivalent teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate school, and must be able to teach Painting, Drawing, Foundations, and relevant digital imaging applications.

Qualified candidates must have extensive knowledge about contemporary painting and digital theory and artistic practice. A strong exhibition record is essential. An interest in interdisciplinary research and course development is strongly desirable.

Starting date: July 1, 2008
